Itchfunding FAQ

What is Itchfunding?

Itchfunding is a type of crowdfunding that uses the sales of a bare bones game in order to fund the improvement of the game. Sales might fund art, editing, layout, and more. By the time the game has fully funded, the game has been upgraded and it's ready to release anew. The game might be released at a new price point to reflect the improvements that have been made. The point of Itchfunding is to avoid putting the burden of fees and other upfront costs on the creator.  It's intended to be an alternative to Kickstarter. Kickstarter looks nice and sleek but it's not as simple as putting the project up. Kickstarter is region-locked, meaning only certain people in certain places can use the platform. Itchfunding can be done anywhere Itch is accessible (though there is inequity there too).  Kickstarter takes 5% when the project is funded. On top of that there's processing fees, taxes, and that's just the stuff for the game itself; if someone wanted to create a physical book then there'd be printing, shipping, and everything else. The Kickstarter model isn't a bad one. The model just won't work for everyone.

What Does This Mean for Mx3?

Medusa's Marauders M.C. (Mx3) is a completely playable game which will be sold in its Itchfunding Edition at $10. The game will receive updates from time to time based on when funding goals are met. The sales from the game will be used in the following ways:

  • Editing
  • Character sheets
  • Art
  • Layout
  • Accessibility optimization
  • Miscellaneous game improvements and costs

Once the game has been fully funded, the Itchfunding Edition will be hidden and the finalized version will be released.

Is there a way to try the game before I buy it?

There is now! Head on over to main page for the game (or click here) and you'll find a heading at the bottom that says, "Download Demo." From there all you need to do is click on the download button and you're all set to get started.

Will there be a discount on the final release version for Itchfunders?

Y'all can have the full edition once it's out. Yep, that's right. You'll basically get the best version of the game half off. I figure that's a fair way to compensate folks for seeing and believing in the vision of this game at its early stages.

I really like this game! How can I support it further?

There's a bunch of different ways:

  • Post about it on social media. Let people know what you like about the game. Use the hashtag #Mx3 so I can find your posts.
  • You can join my Discord server where you can talk with others who like the game. There is space to offer feedback and constructive criticisms which will allow me to make the game better.
  • Invite me on to your podcast or stream to talk about the game.
  • Purchase a second copy or pay above the asking price.
  • Purchase a gift copy for a friend.
  • Purchase a community copy (you get a copy, someone else who might otherwise not be able to buy it gets a copy gratis).
  • Check out some of the other amazing games Driven by Harmony that were made for Harmony Jam. This one doesn't directly support the game, but it uplifts the hobby as a whole and that's the way we win: together.

Will there be a physical book?

At the moment there is no plan to make a physical book. The combination of cost and time make it prohibitively too much for me, the creator, to really feel comfortable doing. The last thing I want to do is make a bunch of promises and then let people down.  If I were to do a physical book, it would likely be a rerelease event separate from the Itchfunding for the initial game. Additionally, I'd have to figure out how to equitably release a discounted physical copy of the book to folks who supported the Itchfunding Edition. Right now, I can't promise any of that. I'm merely speculating on what it would take and explaining why a physical book is not in the cards at this time.

What if the game isn't fully funded?

This is the beauty of Itchfunding over other crowdfunding methods: everyone still benefits. People who purchase the game in its Itchfunding Edition will get a fun game to play and I'll have gotten to put my creative energy into something I'm passionate about and I'll learn some things about crowdfunding.
